Wing One: Hypatia
After reading the biographies and looking at the list of all the women and their place setting of the first wing of the table of the Dinner Party I chose the place setting of the women Hypatia. Hypatia was the greatest Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher during her life time considering during her life time that only the men were typically the only ones in these field of studies. Hypatia worked tiredly to preserve and continue her father Theon works of the Greek Mathematical and Astronomical heritage. Hypatia also worked on to expand the Apollonius of Perga's Conics which is modern geometry, Diophantus of Alexandria Arithmetic which is the modern number theory, and an astronomical table which was just a revised version of Hypatia father’s Theon Almagest. Hypatia attracted many followers whenever she taught, as Hypatia also was a teacher, a lecture, and a philosopher during her life time. The philosophy that Hypatia taught to her followers was Neoplatonist which was consider pagan during her life time which conflicted with the Christian church at the time. Also, when Hypatia was teaching and lecturing Hypatia used the work and the philosophy of Neoplatonic figures of Plotinus, founder of Neoplatonic, and Plotinus student Iamblichus. Hypatia made it her interest to ensure the significance of the Greek religion through her teachings and lectures. Her teachings of the mathematical, and science thinking at the time of her life time were consider to harm the Christian church. So, the Christian church labeled Hypatia ideas of teachings, mathematical, and science as pagan. The way that Hypatia was thinking was very similar to the Greek thought and philosophy. Hypatia became the head of the Platonist school in Alexandria known as the museum of Alexandria which kept a lot of her works. After the Christians killed Hypatia the Museum of Alexandria was raided and all Hypatia writings were destroyed. Hypatia is one of the most well-known and important women of her time and the history as she was the first one to try and advance women and their rights. Also, Hypatia was the first and very well documented women that helped women being able to advance in the fields of Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher.
The most important thing to know what Hypatia did during her life time and achievements was she did not go by the normal status of what women were told to be during her life time. She challenged those status of women just being home makers and stay at home women to become one of the greatest women who became a Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher in her life time and after her life time. She challenged the Christian church and the Christian church beliefs and would not back down even when the Christians attacked and killed her, she still believed in her way of thinking till the very end. That the most important thing that Hypatia accomplished in her life time was becoming a Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher during her lifetime and advancing the women rights. But also, that after her life time that she was remembered as a martyr as she stood up for her beliefs and her way of thinking even when most of her students that she taught converted to being Christian out of fear form the Christian church. Lastly, I like to conclude that Hypatia is the most important if not one of the most important women in history that was successful during her life time trying to advancing the rights of the women. Also, the most important thing was Hypatia fighting against the social norm status of women at the time, and fighting against the Christian church for what she believed in. Then becoming one of the greatest Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher of all time in history to prove women could make and do anything possible. Finally, I like to say that Hypatia most important accomplishment of her time was that she taught some of the greatest minds in history. Also, that Hypatia was well respected throughout her life time even though this time in history women were not consider or allowed to be Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher but just Home Makers. That Hypatia broke the status norm of women just being Home makers and stay home women and nothing else to be being the greatest or one of the greatest women in history to become a Mathematicians, Astronomer, and Philosopher. |
Wing Two: Saint Bridget
After reading the biographies and looking at the list of all the women and their place setting of the second wing of the table of the Dinner Party I chose the place setting of the women Saint Bridget. Saint Bridget was an Irish Catholic Nun and Mother Abbess in Ireland and the very first Catholic Nun and Catholic Mother Abbess in the history of Ireland. Saint Bridget was also one of the very first Catholic Nun and Catholic Mother Abbess in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. Saint Bridget is also one of the most important Saints in Ireland along with Saint Patrick and Saint Columba. Also, Saint Bridget along with Saint Patrick and Saint Columba are Patron Saints of Ireland. Saint Bridget Her Father after witness seeing Saint Bridget giving away jewels to people in order to feed some families that he free Saint Bridget and then let her dedicate her life to God. Rather than marry to the man that Saint Bridget’s father chose for her that she would dedicate her life to God. Saint Bridget was the first women with the permission of the bishop at the time Saint Mel of Armagh she started to start convents and reglious houses throughout Ireland. Saint Bridget took seven Nuns with her created the church of oak known as Kildare Cathedral which was first of many she created. Saint Bridget started what was called the Monastic Movement that spread quickly throughout Ireland and along the way Saint Bridget created many monasteries and covenants. Also, Saint Bridget created the very first of many double monasteries where monks and Nuns live in separate housing in the same Covenant or Monastery. As quickly as Saint Bridget started the Mastic movement many followed in her foot steps to become Nuns and Monks for the catholic church to dedicate their lives to God. Where these Nuns and Monks could live in peace and be able to do Gods work without any distractions or interruptions. Saint Bridget was also known for preforming many reglious miracles throughout her life and is also the only Saint with Saint Patrick to have a feast in the calendar of the Catholic calendar of Saints. Also, Saint Bridget most importance and significance to the Catholic Church and Catholicism is that she was the main reason for it in Ireland with all the Covenants, Monasteries, Churches that Saint Bridget had created.
The most important achievements that Saint Bridget achieved in during her life time was establishing Catholic covenants for Nuns throughout Ireland. As back then there was no Catholic Covenants or Catholic reglious housing for women or Nuns before Saint Bridget went to Bishop Saint Mel of Armagh to get a Covenant for Nuns. That without Saint Bridget going to Bishop Saint Mel of Armagh asking for a Covenant for Nuns that many of the Monasteries, Covenants and Catholic Churches throughout Ireland would not have existed. As Saint Bridget was the very sole reason for uniting all the Catholics throughout Ireland through her movement by creating and establishing Covenants, Monasteries, and Catholic Churches. Also, that Saint Bridget great achievement also help the number of Monks and Nuns Flourish throughout Ireland as she created a place for those to live and be able to live their lives to God. That Saint Bridget also got the numbers of becoming a Catholic throughout Ireland as there now was many Catholic Churches. Also, now people did not have travel farther anymore to just attend Catholic Church and that the Catholic Church was the only Religion that was in Ireland during and before her lifetime. Lastly, I like to say that Saint Bridget is the most if not one of the most Important Figures to the Catholic Church in general and in Ireland. As Saint Bridget started a wide movement for people to join being a Nun or Monk by creating Covenants and Monasteries and many Catholic Churches. That without creating all the Catholic Covenants, Catholic Monasteries, and Catholic Churches then Catholicism would not have at all flourished or expanded at the rate that it did during Saint Bridget lifetime. Also, Saint Bridget was one of the greatest saints not just as a women but as a person in general in Saint hood. As in the history of Saints no Saint as Saint Bridget has started a movement this quickly and spread Catholicism or a religion that quickly through a country in a couple of years. Finally, I like to conclude with that importance of Saint Bridget is just as very important to Ireland just as much as Saint Patrick and Saint Columba is to Ireland. Also, just as important to the Catholic Church as any other Saint in history as she singly handed created the movement of Convents, Monasteries, and Churches of Catholicism in Ireland. |
Wing Three: Elizabeth Blackwell
After reading the biographies and looking at the list of all the women and their place setting of the third wing of the table of the Dinner Party I chose the place setting of the women Elizabeth Blackwell. Elizabeth Blackwell was the very first women to receive a medical degree in the U.S.A and the first women on the medical of the general medical council. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first women to graduate from medical school and received it form the Geneva Medical College in Geneva, New York. Elizabeth Blackwell grew up in England until she moves to New York in 1832 and later started to privately tutored in America in order to support her family after her father’s death. Elizabeth Blackwell decided to become physician at young age and at the time there were no female trained physician an acceptance in to college was not accepted without experience working in the medical field. So, Elizabeth Blackwell moved to Asheville, North Carolina to tutor Dr. Joh Dickson daughters and to get the medical experience required by working with Dr john Dickson. Elizabeth Blackwell enhanced her resume greatly with medical experience by using Dr. John Dickson medical library and by observing and working with Dr. Joh Dickson at his practice. After a while after working with Dr. John Dickson she applied to all the medical school in the U.S.A at the time and was rejected by all except for Geneva Medical College. Where Elizabeth Blackwell was accepted in 1847 and graduated in1849 at the top of her class where she excelled in every course and by then the college closed its doors to women. Elizabeth Blackwell had very difficult times as the dean never wrote his recommendation and no patients wanted a women treating them. So, in 1859 Elizabeth Blackwell moved back to London, England and got some help from her cousin began to work uber for Sir James Paget at St. Bartholomew hospital in London. While in London England she became good friend with Florence Nightingale who also was trying to fight for women to become doctors in England. After a year in London, England 1851 she returned back the United States of America to start her own practice with her Sister Emily Blackwell who also was trying to get her Doctorate Degree. Elizabeth Blackwell continued to fight for women rights for being doctors and went back to England to continue her fight leaving her sister to run everything in the United States of America. Also, another important Achievement of Elizabeth Blackwell is that she started the movement of women becoming doctors in the world.
The most important achievements that Elizabeth Blackwell achieved during her life time was becoming the first women to get a doctorate degree in the United States of America. Another important achievement is Elizabeth Blackwell was also the first women to create and run her own practice of medicine with her Sister. Another Important achievement of Elizabeth Blackwell was the first women to find the college for women being Doctors and it was called Woman’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary in 1868. Also, another important achievement of Elizabeth Blackwell was a great lecture and teacher and the dean of this college while she was in the United States of America. Another important achievement of Elizabeth Blackwell was she created and founded the hospital of New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children in 1857, which was is still part of New York University Downtown Hospital. The most Important achievement that Elizabeth Blackwell accomplishment was that she pushed the boundaries of the social norm for women becoming doctors. To show that women could be doctors just as much doctors as men could be doctors as showed this by the accomplishments of Elizabeth Blackwell. So, the most Importance of Elizabeth Blackwell was that she paved the women becoming doctors and showed that without her it might have taken longer to get women to becoming doctors. Also, that Elizabeth Blackwell is the most important if not one of the most important women in history for the movement to get women the rights to be equals to men. As this shown by her becoming the first women to get a degree in the United States of America and if she did not do this women might have never been able to accomplish of becoming doctors in the U.S.A. Lastly, I like to say that Elizabeth Blackwell is one of the most crucial women ion history of women’s rights and their right to be equal to men and the right to be able to anything that man can do. Also, that without Elizabeth Blackwell pushing back against the social norm for what women should and should not be it helped all women across the world. So, these women were able to stand up and say that they will not just sit back and do as they are told by the men and that they are no equal to men. Finally, I like to conclude with that without Elizabeth Blackwell becoming the first women in United States of America to get a doctor’s degree there would not be all these women being doctors in the world today or at all. |
