Songs Of Gold Mountain Poem And Haiku Poem About The Asian Americans Presentation
Pictures Of Angel Island For Poem Number 2 From Songs Of Gold Mountain
I have chosen the second poem form the Songs Of Gold Mountain and the poem is this "The moment I hear we've entered the port, I am all ready; My belongings wrapped in a bundle. Who would Have expected joy to become sorrow; Detained in a dark, crude, filthy room? What can I do? Cruel treatment, not one restful breath of air. Scarcity of food, severe restrictions-all unbearable. Here even a proud man bows his head low." (Page 2, Poem 2, from the reading Songs Of Gold Mountain). Why I have chosen this poem from Songs Of Gold Mountain, because It describes how every Asian American was feeling when they came from their country to the United States. At first, they were happy that they could go to the United States to get jobs and provide for their families, but then that happiness and joy quickly turned in sadness and anger as they were not even being treated as if they were human beings but animals, that were being locked in cages and rooms with the key thrown away. Where there were usually more than 50 people just in one room and there were little to no food, water. There were no showers, just a room with bunk beds like a jail expect in jail its 2-4 maximum people, here in Angel Island barracks there was more than 50 people in each room and little room for people other than to sleep there. I also, chose this poem because it describes and shows the harsh punishment that the Asian Americans had to endure when they left their home country to come here to the United States. That what they thought was a fair and equal opportunity place to get jobs and provide for their families was place that discriminate against those deemed threats and outsiders to the United States. To the Asian Americans, it was as if this was no better than home, but at home at least they were free and earning little money they worked for to provide for their families. Also, I chose the poem because it shows just how far and how hard the Asian Americans had to be working to achieve civil rights and being treat as an equal human being like very one else in the United States. Also, that the Asian American had to fight in order just to be able to provide for their families and that was hard living to provide for their families her in United States for many years before they were no longer looked at in disgust or looked down on. Lastly, I chose the poem because it does not just relate to just a couple of Asian Americans, no it related to how the Asian Americans felt. As all the Asian Americans believed that this wrong, and that they had done nothing to deserved too be treated this way. Also, that the Asian Americans believed that this was a violation as human being and that no one or one group of people should have to be treated as if they were animals.
What stood out about this poem to me the most form the Songs OF Gold Mountain was that they person whoever wrote the poem was not just speaking for himself. The author was speaking on behalf for all the Asian American’s that were locked like caged animals at Angel Island when they arrived here form their home country to being here in the United States. When I read this poem and the other poems form Song OF Gold Mountain and compared them to see what they had in common and what was different. That the other authors wrote about their own feelings and thoughts, but this author captured with his words how all the Asian Americans felt there being locked up on Angel Island. Also, what stood out about this poem more than the other poems in the reading Songs Of Gold Mountain was that I could feel the happiness and joy turn into sorrow, anger, and sadness as I was reading the poem. It was as if I was reading the poem and that I was experiencing the same things that the Asian Americans were experiencing when they were locked up on Angel Island. That I could really feel their pain as the Asian Americans were being locked away in cages and rooms and the only thing they could do was sit and write about their pain. So, they, could pass the time and hope it would not be long before they were freed let out of the cages and rooms were free to go where ever they wanted. But sadly, most pf Asian Americans were detained and treated as animals and locked way for months before they were freed. Where finally after all these months Asian Americans could get jobs and provide for their families that they left behind. Who could only hope they were still alive, and not dead as they had not heard form them in months, as they were locked up in cages on Angel Island. Lastly, what stood out to me was that this could happen and that the President of the United States knew but kept it hidden form the public. To keep it from look as if he himself the President of the United States of America order the people at Angle Island to detain and treat the Asian Americans as locked up caged animals. But when in fact I learned from history that he orders it and only after the public and other countries found out did he sign a law that stopped treating the Asian Americans this way. Finally, what stood out about this poem the most form me when I read the poem form the Songs OF Gold Mountain was the authenticity that it felt I when I read the poem. What I mean by this is that you could tell the author experienced this cruel treatment and punishment first hand, as the author was there at Angel Island when all the Asian Americans were locked up like caged animals and treated like animals.
What Intrigued me about this poem from the Songs Of Gold Mountain was that how these Asian American were locked up for long periods of times is that their families would have noticed. I would have thought the families of the Asian Americans that were locked up would have at least tried to get their government involved. So, that these Asian Americans can find out what is happening to their families, as there were thousands if not even more people detained at Angel Island. So, I would think that there would thousands of family’s members wondering what happened to their families. So, then these families would try to get their governments involved with the United States government, to try and set their families free from the Angel Island. Also, intrigued me was how these poems went unnoticed at Angel Island for many years, as all the walls at the barracks where the Asian Americans were kept at Angel Island, were covered in Chinese writing. You think that people who have been to Angel Island would have noticed the writing and try to translate it or figure out what it means instead of just looking and moving on. It was not until many years that these two-people found them and then brought them to a historic society to preserve Angel Island as a land mark. Then get these poems on the walls at the barracks on Angel Island published and to recognized what exactly went on at Angel Island and how these Asian Americans were punished, detained, and treating like animals. I also, Found it intriguing that it took so long to get the governments involved and to stop the United States government detaining and holding the Asian Americans on Angel Island for so many months to years. That only when the some of the bodies were sent back or were announced that they died did the governments for these Asian Americans step in and try to stop the United States government from treating their Asian American like animals. I found it intriguing that these Countries and governments with Asian Americans were sweeping the treatment of the Asian Americans under the rug just as much as the United States government. Who was making it harsh for these Asian Americans to even get in the country United States and treating them like Animals. To me these Countries and governments are just as responsible for the treatment and the discrimination against Asian Americans as the United States is. It was as if they said go ahead do whatever you like with these Asian Americans we do not care what happens to them. These countries and governments only cared when too many bodies of deceased families members were starting to show up, That is where these countries and governments then said enough is enough by then it was too late for a lot of Asian Americans and their families. Lastly, I like to conclude with that this poem from the Songs OF Gold Mountain was very intriguing. While teaching me how exactly hat these Asian Americans suffered through the years at Angel Island. How the Asian Americans had to overcome the harsh treatment created by them United States and it government. Finally, I like to say that this poem taught me and others that no matter how much the Asian Americans suffered through the years at Angel Island. Is that the Asian Americans never gave up hope of trying to achieve the American dream and try providing for their families.
